Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College

The Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, abbreviated as JGEC, is an institute for technical education in the state of West Bengal in India. It was established in 1961.

The college is situated at the outskirt of Jalpaiguri Town, the Divisional Headquarters of seven Districts of North Bengal.

JGEC is affiliated to West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT), and the courses conducted by it have the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The College conducts Bachelor's degree (B. Tech) in six branches and Master's degree (M. Tech) in two branches of Engineering.

The principal of the college is Dr. Jyotirmoy Jhampati.

History

JGEC is the second oldest of all technical institutions beside the Bengal Engineering and Science University (formerly Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur) in the state of West Bengal. At the time of its inception, JGEC was affiliated to the Calcutta University. For the period between 1963 and 1999, the college was affiliated to the University of North Bengal, then to the West Bengal University Of Technology.

Geography

JGEC is located in the middle of the "chicken's neck" covering a land of 160 acres, 42 kilometres east of the business town of Siliguri.

Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Lava, Lolegaon are three hours drive from the college campus. To the North is 'Dooars', meaning the door to Bhutan. Dooars is famous for tea gardens producing CTC Tea, Gorumara National Park and Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary.

There is a view of Mount Kanchanjunga, the third highest peak in the Himalayas from the college campus. To the east, is the river Teesta. The river Karala flows on the western boundary of the campus. To the south is the lifeline of the north-east, National Highway Number 31A.

The institution has ties with Amrita Viswa-Vidyapeetham for INDO-US Inter-University Collaborative Initiative in higher education and research for a special Satellite Network to be established by ISRO through one Satellite Interactive Terminal (SIT). This is for linkage with universities in the USA, namely the University of California at Berkeley, State University of New York, Harvard University, Princeton University etc. with an associated initiative of Microsoft, Qualcomm and Cadence.

Admissions

Admission is through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) conducted by the West Bengal Joint Examination Admissions Board (WBJEEB).

Lateral admissions are through the Joint Entrance Examination of Lateral Entry (JELET), also conducted by WBJEEB.

The college is affliated to the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT).

Campus life

JGEC is a residential institution, with over 1600 students residing on campus. It offers students the opportunity to participate in over 14 active clubs and organizations such as: Music Club, Drama Club, Magazine Club, Photography Club, Nature Club, Trekking Club, Art Club, Athletic Club, Center for Innovation, Literary Society and others.

The JGEC STUDENT'S UNION is the only one which has no political influence among all the Government colleges of W.B.

Training and placement

JGEC has a Training and & Placement Cell under the supervision of Dr. S. K. Sengupta, Professor and Head, Department of Training and Placement.

The cell introduces students to the corporate world by organizing soft skill training, beginning with the Second Year Students with the help of Cognizant Technology Solutions, Kolkata.

Annual Fest

The annual cultural fest of JGEC is JECLAT. It runs over 7 to 10 days in February or March, and consists of cultural events, followed by a Reunion and a Grand Social Night at the end.

Tech Fest

The annual tech fest of JGEC is called "SRISTI" which is generally organised in september and consists of various technical workshops and events.
